Off-Campus Access to Library Databases

When accessing some resources listed on the Kresge Library Web Site from off campus, you may be prompted for a name and ID number by the library database access system (a proxy server - see the screenshot below). Follow the instructions on the screen to log in. If you have any difficulty, Ask a Librarian for help.Screenshot of the Kresge Library Database Access page

Why do you need to log in through a proxy server?
Although Kresge Library would like to provide open access to all of our library resources to all users, everywhere, we are contractually obligated to adhere to certain licensing restrictions that are required by the vendors and companies that sell us access to these databases (OCLC FirstSearch, Lexis-Nexis, Gale Infotrac, etc). These restrictions usually involve only allowing users to access the licensed resources from the campus computer network, or (when allowed) through a proxy server that we guarantee is only accessible by current Oakland University students, staff, and faculty. If you are not a member of one of these groups, you can still get access to these proxied resources by making a visit to the Kresge Library and using our computers. If you are on campus, you will not be asked to login to our proxy server to get into our online resources.
